When you think about young exciting talent, there aren’t many MLB teams that come to mind more so than the Houston Astros. Over the past few years they have produced some exciting ball players that are now starring on the major league roster.
The Astros have an eye for talent and in the 2015 June Amateur draft, their first pick (2nd overall) was shortstop Alex Bregman out of Louisiana State University.
Bregman, was a standout in college, and in his senior year he started all 66 LSU games at shortstop, while batting .323 (84-for-260) with 22 doubles, three triples, nine homers, 49 RBI, 59 runs and 38 steals.
After he was drafted by the ‘Stros, the organization placed him on their Class A Season, Quad Cities River Bandits and in 29 games he batted .259, with five doubles, and a home run. He was then promoted to the Class A Advanced Lancaster Jethawks, where he remained for the rest of the season and batted .319, with eight doubles, four home runs, 21 RBI and 8 stolen bases.
For the 2016 season, the New Mexico native is now with Double-A Corpus Christi and in 11 games he is hitting an impressive .395 (17 for 43), with five home runs and 14 RBI’s.
He has hit safely in all eleven games so far this season, which is only five games shy of his career record in the minors. From August 8 – Sept 1 last season, the Houston prospect hit safely in 16 straight games and recorded 10 multi-hit games in that span.
On Monday, Bregman earned the Texas League’s Player of the Week honors after posting a .400 batting average and launching five home runs through his first ten games.
In 2015, another Astros young star infielder, Carlos Correa, played with the Hooks and in 29 games, he batted .385 with seven home runs and 32 RBIs as he made his way to the big leagues last summer.
But Bregman may not be tabbed to make the majors this season, and even though he isn’t considered a top prospect, he is putting his name on the map as a player to watch very closely.
