If anyone were to deserve a great start to the season, Philadelphia Phillies’ prospect Anthony Vasquez would definitely be on the top of the list. The left-hander has had quite the journey through the Minor League’s since signing with the Seattle Mariners in 2009.
He now starts the season with a 5-0 record in five starts with the Double-A Reading Fightin Phils with a solid 1.54 ERA in thirty-five innings of work. He has gone seven innings in four of the five starts with his most recent start on Monday evening against New Hampshire being his most impressive yet.
The twenty-nine year old worked seven and one third innings of shut out ball with just two hits allowed and struck out a dynamic nine batters while walking just two. He is currently leading the Eastern League in the wins column.
Vasquez was drafted by the Mariners in the eighteenth round of the 2009 MLB Draft while playing at USC. Since then he has spent time throughout Seattle’s Farm System and then even played several times in the Mexican League until he signed as a Free Agent with the Phillies in February 2015.
Although he has always shown that he can be a solid starting option in a rotation, the start of this season, although just a month old seems to be shaping up to be one that the Phillies will notice.
