The Reading Fightin Phils’ right fielder Brian Pointer helped his Double-A squad to an 8-5 victory over the Portland Sea Dogs with three home runs.
The victory kept the Fightin Phils in second place, just a game behind the New Britain Rock Cats and Trenton Thunder, who are both tied for first place in the Eastern League Eastern Division.
The Fightin Phils put up a run in the first on an RBI double off the bat of Kelly Dugan scoring KC Serna. In the top of the second, Pointer hit his first homer of the game to extend the score to 2-0.
The Sea Dogs added a run in the bottom of the second and one in the third to tie the game at 2-2.
In the 6th, Pointer came up with one out and one on and launched his second home run of the game over the center field fence to put Reading up 4-2. In the bottom of the frame, Portland scored three runs to take a 5-4 lead highlighted by Manuel Margot‘s three run home run.
But Reading would not be denied a victory as Pointer hit a two-run home run with no outs in the top of the eighth, his third of the game to put the Fightin Phils up 7-5. An RBI triple by J.P. Crawford scoring Gustavo Pierre, added an insurance run and a 8-5 lead. Readings Ryan O’Sullivan pitched two scoreless innings to help secure the victory.
