It was a good week for the Erie SeaWolves as a team.  It was an even better week for the SeaWolves outfielder Mike Gerber.  Gerber was a key part in Erie’s success this week as they went 5-1.  With that, Gerber has been named Legends On Deck Eastern League Player of the Week.

In the week of May 9th to May 15th, Gerber went 10-for-21 at the plate, scoring four runs, while hitting a double, three home runs, with five RBI.  His best game of the week was against Hartford on May 11th when he went 4-for-5 hitting two of his weeks three home runs.  He was riding a six game hitting streak until it was snapped in a double header on Sunday.  For the season Gerber’s hitting line is .317/.368/.504/.872, with five home runs and 17 RBI.  In fewer games played in Double-A in 2017, Gerber is close to matching or passing his totals with Erie from last season.

The Detroit Tigers selected Gerber in the 15th round of the 2014 draft.  He was selected out of high school by the Yankees a couple of years prior, but decided to attend Creighton University.  So far in his professional career, Gerber has played every level in the Tigers organization up to Double-A.  His path to the next level may be blocked for the time being, but if his play continues the way it has, he could reach Toledo at some point this season.  He is currently listed as the Detroit Tigers #7 prospect according to MLB.com.

Congratulations to Mike Gerber on being named the Legends on Deck Eastern League Player of the Week.

HONORABLE MENTIONS

There never seems to be a clear-cut winner for weekly awards.  Most of the time a player shines a bit brighter than the others, but the race for the hardware is usually a good one.  As was the case again this week in the Eastern League.

Julian Merryweather of the Akron Rubber Ducks made one start this week and was tremendous.  In his six-inning outing, Merryweather struck out 10 and allowed one run on two hits.  Another pitcher that caught my attention this week was Gerber’s teammate Sean Donatello.  Donatello recorded two saves and struck out three in two perfect innings.  Yacksel Rios or the Reading Fightin’ Phils was outstanding on the hill as well.  He picked up two holds and struck out five.

Two Altoona Curve players, Pablo Reyes and Edwin Espinal combined went 18-for-44 (.409), with 11 runs scored, six doubles, two home runs, and 14 RBI in an outstanding offensive week.

Slade Heathcott of Richmond chipped in an 11-for-23 week with a home run and five driven in for the Flying Squirrels.

Rounding out the honorable mentions, Yefry Ramirez of the Trenton Thunder picked up a win in his lone start going five innings and striking out 10.
