The Detroit Tigers have one of the most improved farm systems in baseball. Trading players like Verlander, Kinsler, JD Martinez, Upton and others in 2017 yielded a decent return. If the Tigers fail to excite fans this season, checking out their Minor League affiliates would be a good summer pastime for dedicated fans. Many of these names may be on the Tigers roster within the next couple seasons.
Here’s a look at where the Tigers top prospects will be on MiLB Opening Day:
Toledo Mud Hens (Triple A)
Mike Gerber, OF
Dawel Lugo, INF
Grayson Long, RHP
Jairo Labourt, LHP
Bryan Garcia, RHP **DL
Erie Seawolves (Double A)
Franklin Perez, RHP **DL
Beau Burrows, RHP
Kyle Funkhouser, RHP
Sandy Baez, RHP
Sergio Alcantara, SS
Tyler Alexander, LHP
Matt Hall, LHP
Gerson Moreno, RHP **DL
Troy Montgomery, OF
Jake Robson, OF
Lakeland Flying Tigers (Class A – Advanced)
Alex Faedo, RHP
Jake Rogers, C
Isaac Paredes, SS
Gregory Soto, LHP
Daz Cameron, OF
Derek Hill, OF
Jason Foley, RHP **DL
Jose Azocar, OF
West Michigan Whitecaps (Class A)
Matt Manning, RHP **DL
Joey Morgan, C
Reynaldo Rivera, OF
One of the most interesting parts of following the Tigers farm system this season will be the speed at which these prospects advance. Looking back, someone like Justin Verlander was drafted in 2004 and found his way to his MLB later in the 2005 season (via Lakeland and Erie). Will Alex Faedo, who is starting Opening Day for Lakeland, follow a similar path? There’s many great questions like this headed into the 2018 MiLB season.
For the second week in a row, Happy Opening Day!
