MiLB: All Star Game Recaps for June 18th

The 2019 Mid Season Classic’s started on Saturday with the Florida State League kicking off the All Star games. On Tuesday, five other leagues had their respective stars on the field competing to see which division would have bragging rights for another year.

DOUBLE A

SOUTHERN LEAGUE

The Southern League All Star Game was hosted by the first half South Division Champs, the Biloxi Shuckers.

The North jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning after Daulton Varsho (Jackson Generals), scored ahead of a double off the bat of Luis Robert (Birmingham Barons).  Then in the top of the second, the North added five more runs to put them in the lead for good. P.J. Higgins (Tennessee Smokies) hit a one out double scoring fellow Smokies teammate Vimael Machin and Josh Lowe (Montgomery Biscuits). Then Varsho hit an RBI single scoring Higgins to put North up 4-0. After a mound visit by South, Robert hit a run scoring triple and Jesus Sanchez (Montomery Biscuits) followed that up with an RBI single to blow open the game and put the North ahead 6-0.

The South finally got on the scoreboard with a run in the bottom of the 4th on a two-out single from Patrick Leonard.

The North added a run in the top of the fifth and the South scored single runs in the bottom of the seventh and ninth but would fall short in this game, 7-3.

CLASS A ADVANCED

CAROLINA LEAGUE

The Carolina League All Star game was hosted by the Frederick Keys.

The South All Stars took a quick 4-0 lead in the top of the second on a fielders choice off the bat of Yonny Hernandez (Down East Wood Ducks), scoring Jake Adams (Fayetteville Woodpeckers) and fellow Woodpecker Corey Julks. Then Payton Henry (Carolina Mudcats) singled home Hernandez and Ryan Dorow (Down East Wood Ducks) with the 3rd and 4th runs of the inning.

In the 6th, the South stars struck again by adding a single run to take a commanding 5-0 lead when Leody Taveras (Down East Wood Ducks) singled to score Tyler Payne (Myrtle Beach Pelicans). In the bottom of the frame the North started their comeback by added four runs to pull within 5-4. Pedro Castellanos (Salem Red Sox) got the team going on a run scoring sac fly, scoring Salem teammate Ryan Fitzgerald. Then Cole Freeman (Potomac Nationals) singled home Cole Billingsley (Frederick Keys). A two run double from Willy Yahn (Frederick Keys) added the final two runs.

In the 7th inning, the North toed the game at 5-5 on a single from Billingsley scoring Nick Banks (Potomac Nationals). In the Next full inning, Banks hot a three run home run to complete the comeback and put the north up for good at 8-5. The South attempted a comeback of their home scoring two runs on a two-run jack off the bat of Julks, but it was not enough as the North All Stars held on for an 8-7 victory.

SOUTH ATLANTIC LEAGUE

The South Atlantic League was hosted by the West Virginia Power.

It was a pitchers duel through the first five innings both teams were help scoreless. Then in the top of the 6th inning, the South All Stars struck first with two runs on a two-run home run off the bat of Brandon Lockridge (Charleston RiverDogs), scoring Ronny Mauricio (Columbia Fireflies), who doubled with one out, one batter prior. The North battled back to score a run in the bottom of the frame on an RBI single from Pedro Gonzalez (Hickory Crawdads) and then added 5 more runs in the bottom of the eighth to steal away the game. The scoring came on a bases loaded double from Doran Turchin (Delmarva Shorebirds) and an RBI double from Lolo Sanchez (Greensboro Grasshoppers).

The North pitchers threw three scoreless innings, leading the North to a 6-2 victory.

MIDWEST LEAGUE

The Midwest League All Star game as hosted by the South Bend Cubs.

The game ended in a 3-3 tie as both the East and West could only manage three runs a piece.

The East All Stars got on the board first with a run in the second after an RBI sac fly from Ulrich Bojarski (West Michigan Whitecaps). In the top of the fourth, the West took a one run lead on a two-run home run from Jerar Encarnacion (Clinton LumberKings).

The East tied the game at 2-2 when Miguel Vargas doubled home Niko Hulsizer (Great Lakes Loons) and then took the lead on Bojarski’s second RBI sac fly of the game. Then in the top of the 8th, the West Stars scored on a throwing error to tie the game at 3-3, and that is how the game would end.

The California League All Star game was hosted by Inland Empire 66ers.

The scoring started in the top of the second when the North All Stars put up three runs on an RBI single off the bat of Mark Karaviotis and a two-RBI triple from Jameson Hannah.

After the South scored one in the bottom of the 6th to pull within 3-1, the North pulled away with one in the 7th, two in the 8th and one in the 9th to finish off a 7-1 victory.
